Stav Gjestegaard, Kasjotten -Continued from page1

There was also a wip-cell, also called the "death cell", where inmates waited for their sentence. One of the last death sentences given, ended his last days here. Seldom its an attempt to violate the prison regulation, but once in a while it did. The punishment was physical violence, no food or the solitary confinement. All punishment was completed in the hallway with the janitor, witnesses or the warden present.

In 1904 it was decided that it was not good enough according to regulation, so the prison was closed. From April 1st the same year until sept.8th 1923, the building was empty, but was taken into use in for mentally ill patients. All woman. Its was from that day referred to as Stav Pleiehjem all the way to 1975.

After a few years, the prison was bought and transformed into a hotel. During renovation it was important to keep the original style. The old wood and the doors was saved, but the windows were changed. The hotel has all together 38 rooms available for rent, where 24 is old cells merged together. All the rooms are equipped with modern standard, but there are still very classic.and original. In may of 2003 we changed name to Stav Gjestegaard to emphasize the location and the atmosphere of the hotel. The name "Kasjotten (the cell) " will most likely be the name which many people will know the hotel by, even though it just refers to a certain time-period for the structure itself.
